Fly Fishing the Nissitissit River - Pepperell, Massachusetts - We are privileged to have one of the best fly fishing spots in Massachusetts. That is the Nissitissit River (~10.5 miles long) in Pepperell located off Brookline Street. A state designated “fly fishing only” area named after outdoor naturalist and Lowell sportsman Henry Colombo. The scenic walk into the wooded 340 acre area has a small monument to Henry. The river is clean with sandy bottom. So clean that Eastern Brook Trout is the main catch. Fly fishing has advanced considerably today with top gear made out of Hi-Tech composites and the flys made of synthetic materials. The real pros still tie their own using as many natural components (hair, fur, feathers) as possible to simulate, as best as possible, the insects that trout feed on. The Nissitissit River is shallow enough in the Pepperell section to use waders in order to get that perfect casting position. Speaking of fly fishing gear for fly anglers! Pepperell has the very thoroughly stocked (for freshwater and saltwater fly fishing) “Evening Sun Fly Shop” in Pepperell Center. Get your rods, reels, apparel, pre-made flys or material and books to create your own fishing flys. You can count on expert advice from the owner (Charlie) an avid fly fisherman himself.
